Bought in 2005 by retained, this site comprises a mall of shops (with offices above) aspected onto the high street of this Gloucestershire town. Since it was built in the early 1970’s a large superstore with car park was developed on land immediately to its rear.
Ralph Guilor Architects were asked to evaluate the site planning potential and propose together with a general upgrading of the existing properties a further new development to the rear of the existing shopping mall. These new build retail units together with new pedestrian links through the site would create a dual aspect row of shows with a new shopping courtyard to the rear facing the supermarket.
As well as improving the appearance of the existing shopping mall and buildings, this creates better links from the high street to the supermarket, improves the pedestrian traffic past the existing (and new) shops, creates an attractive new shopping courtyard and improves on the retail zone A accommodation on the site – while also adding to the value of the site.
Due to the recent economic climate, the new build element of the proposals have temporarily been placed on hold although the enabling works to the existing building to facilitate the future buildings has now commenced.
